Matsu is indeed very close to China, which is only 9.5 km away at the nearest spot. Thus it has served as a front-line outpost for Taiwan since 1949. Unlike Kinmen, which has endured some incredibly bloody conflicts in the past sixty years, Matsu has memories that are largely more mysterious than painful.
